As a young woman coming of age in the late 1990s, Lauryn Hill was one of my music idols. She is one of the original “queens” of natural hair, sporting locs before it became a trend. Lauryn Hill, an eight-time Grammy Award winner continues to be an “off-the-beaten-path” originator and thinker. Her 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is no question, one of greatest albums of all time. Her music and rhythms connected to your heart and soul while stimulating your mind. Ms. Hill has been in and out of the public spotlight since she went into seclusion in 2000 for various personal reasons. Since then, her public life has seemingly been surrounded by one controversy after another. Some of it is hearsay, other controversies stem from various actions and statements she made throughout the years. The latest incident is that of tax evasion charges for not filing taxes from 2005 to 2007. In a written statement on her Tumblr page, Lauryn “re-educates” us about who she is, the tax charges and why she went into seclusion. She states:

“I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes, but it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind, and therefore my health and integrity. So I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it.”
Lauryn goes on to attack the music industry for “veiled racism, sexism, ageism, nepotism, and deliberate economic control.” Hill writes that, “Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright.”
Specifically addressing the tax charges, Lauryn states, “My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes.”
Lately, Lauryn has been regularly appearing at various venues. One of her latest venues was at the Highline Ballroom in New York a couple of weeks ago. In the intimate setting, she allowed five of her six children to come on stage and sing and rap with her. She also recently performed in London and made a surprise appearance at Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert. Sporting a new cropped afro and signature linen wide-legged pants, from the pictures, she seems joyful and rejunvented.
Lauryn Hill ended her Tumblr statement by saying, “To those supporters who were told that I abandoned them, that is untrue. I abandoned greed, corruption, and compromise, never you, and never the artistic gifts and abilities that sustained me.” For fans like me, that’s good to know. We are rooting for you Lauryn to put these issues behind you and allow your artistic gifts to shine again.
