The “Re-education” of Lauryn Hill: New hair, music and oh yeah, that tax evasion thing [+PHOTOS]

As a young woman coming of age in the late 1990s, Lauryn Hill was one of my music idols. She is one of the original “queens” of natural hair, sporting locs before it became a trend. Lauryn Hill, an eight-time Grammy Award winner continues to be an “off-the-beaten-path” originator and thinker. Her 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is no question, one of greatest albums of all time. Her music and rhythms connected to your heart and soul while stimulating your mind. Ms. Hill has been in and out of the public spotlight since she went into seclusion in 2000 for various personal reasons. Since then, her public life has seemingly been surrounded by one controversy after another. Some of it is hearsay, other controversies stem from various actions and statements she made throughout the years. The latest incident is that of tax evasion charges for not filing taxes from 2005 to 2007. In a written statement on her Tumblr page, Lauryn “re-educates” us about who she is, the tax charges and why she went into seclusion. She states:

Old school Lauryn

“I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes, but it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind, and therefore my health and integrity. So I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it.”

Lauryn goes on to attack the music industry for “veiled racism, sexism, ageism, nepotism, and deliberate economic control.” Hill writes that, “Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright.”

Specifically addressing the tax charges, Lauryn states, “My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes.”

Lately, Lauryn has been regularly appearing at various venues. One of her latest venues was at the Highline Ballroom in New York a couple of weeks ago. In the intimate setting, she allowed five of her six children to come on stage and sing and rap with her. She also recently performed in London and made a surprise appearance at Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert. Sporting a new cropped afro and signature linen wide-legged pants, from the pictures, she seems joyful and rejunvented.

Lauryn Hill ended her Tumblr statement by saying, “To those supporters who were told that I abandoned them, that is untrue. I abandoned greed, corruption, and compromise, never you, and never the artistic gifts and abilities that sustained me.” For fans like me, that’s good to know. We are rooting for you Lauryn to put these issues behind you and allow your artistic gifts to shine again.

And the award for best natural hair goes to a wig…2012 Billboard Music Awards [PHOTOS]

I wonder how many celebrities are secretly transitioning or have already transitioned to natural hair? I look forward to a day when celebrities everywhere will stand united with wigs in hand and shout with one voice, “NO MORE!” (You know I’m kidding, right?) Until that day, I will settle for Brandy Norwood’s fabulous natural hair wig! She was stunting on the red carpet this past weekend at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. Brandy gets a lot of criticism for practically anything she does, says or wears. This time I think she got it right. See more pics below.

Brandy wore a Herve Leger by Max Azria Spring 2012 bandage dress pair with rose-gold metallic Christian Louboutin bow-accented ‘Lady Peep’ slingbacks. Her accessories included a gold leopard-print clutch and London Manori statement jewels. The hair was big and voluptuous with a nice angled cut. (Note: Someday, I would love to cut my real natural hair at an angle…) The volume reminds me of Kelly Rowland’s natural hair weave. Surprisingly, Kelly wore her hair super sleek and straight for the awards.

Also receiving an honorable mention is Alicia Keys beautiful braided bun. Her look was pure, simple elegance. Singer, Monica also wore a very pretty braided style. As for Brandy, today we love her curly hair, next week we’ll be analyzing her long, straight hair. It’s okay. Go ahead girl, have fun.
What do you think of Brandy’s new look and the other featured celebs?

Naps on the Street: Nicole Ari Parker at Street Car Named Desire Opening Night [PHOTOS]

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this woman! I’m always inspired by women who seem to do it all. Nicole Ari Parker is a actress (most noted for her role in the hit TV drama “Soul Food”), model, wife and entrepreneur. Now add to that list, star of the all-new production of Tennessee Williams’ Broadway classic, A Streetcar Named Desire. This multi-ethnic cast also stars two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Blair Underwood, two-time Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega and actor Wood Harris who starred in “Above the Rim” and “Remember the Titans.” Nicole Ari Parker attended the opening night after party sporting a new curly cut and color. She looks absolutely fabulous with hubby, actor Boris Kodjoe on her arm…Tell us what you think of Nicole’s new look in the comment section below.

Raven Symone: Buttas whipped and shoes to match–well maybe not match [PHOTOS]

Raven-Symone made her Broadway debut in ‘Sister Act’ at the Broadway Theatre on March 27, 2012 in New York City. She is starring in the show as Deloris Van Cartier, who was played by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1992 film version. Raven is one of my favorite naturals. She is such an inspiration in so many different ways. Her work ethic and track record speak for themselves. In another post I discuss how Raven chooses to rock her natural curls most of the time, but when she is working she wears it straight or in a weave. Also, we discussed on LYN the practicality of celebs (or folks in general who work a lot) being able to rock natural/textured hair all the time. For the record, I think Raven looks absolutely beautiful, and the straight hair is on point. (Actually, I think when I finally go to the stylist for a straigtening, I will have a pic of her in hand…lol) What do you think of Raven’s look? Oh, and let’s not forget the mismatched shoes…Please share your thoughts in the comment section below. Or, on our Facebook page under the article.
