I must say that I’ve been a Raven Symone fan since her über cute kid days on the Cosby Show. Today, she’s an all-grown-up media mogul, and she’s doing her thing—natural style. I remember seeing her interview in Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair” as she talked about the pressure of having to look a certain way all the time for work. It got me thinking about the pressure that we all go through to look good—to get or keep a job, to get or keep a man. In the end, you just have to be true to yourself and do you. At the same time, you have to pay the bills.
Raven wears weaves for work and when she’s not working she prefers to wear her natural. I applaud her for embracing her natural hair, even if people say she looks like a “poodle”, as she said in her Tyra Show interview.
In whatever you do, you’re going to have ignorant people who just don’t understand. We have to develop a tough skin and not be insecure. Do I fault Raven for not wearing her hair natural 24/7? Heck no! Variety is what makes us unique as black people. Just don’t damage your hair and your self-esteem in the process of beauty.
